The Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus)

The Pink-footed Goose is breeding in the northern part of the Western Palearctic with two distinct populations: one on Iceland and the eastcoast of Greenland and the other one breeding on Svalbard.

The populations of the Pink-footed Goose breeding on Greenland and Iceland spent their winter in Britain whereas the population breeding on svalbard are wintering in Denmark, the northwest of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The birds arriving from svalbard for their wintering can be observed over the entire length of the wadden sea and also inlands in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Though, it must be mentioned that because of the rather smallish breeding populations there are always only small troops around in a winter area.

Voice: Two- and three-syllable honking notes, high-pitched, lacking the cackling quality of the White-fronted Goose. Notes like "ung-unk" or "wink-wink-wink" or "king-wink".

Habitat: In winter on grasslands, arable fields near coasts, marshes, estuaries and rivers, however the Pink-footed Goose prefers arable fields. Breeds colonially amongst rocky outcrops on hillsides and river gorges and also on the open tundra.
